We're working on a project with redsatsuma and BBC to produce a new website to geographically map the collaborations between BBC and their external partners.

We can’t give too much information about the project at this stage as it’s still in development and we need to respect the privacy of the client.

We can tell you that the project allows the user to browse and search through the list of publically visible collaborations between BBC and their external collaborators, and also allows the visitor to navigate an interactive Flash driven map of all collaborations in real time – any time the database it updated, so is the online map!

This sort of technology is rather special. We could port this over to touch screen displays inside offices or information kiosks around the city (streamed from the internet, or even a static dump of the data in XML format for where there is no internet access).

We’re looking at ways of getting this type of technology introduced into shopping centres around the country. We already have the technology and the resources to make it work and expect to have a prototype ready by Q4 2009.

As much as we're all about technology, we like to be as ethical and supportive of the community as possible. We're currently working towards investing in youth development services in the North of England, starting with the Greater Manchester area. If you want to know more about what we're getting involved in, then read on!

So it’s a fact that more and more of today’s youth are getting into playing computer games. They play Guitar Hero in their consoles, or they play football games such as Fifa or Pro Evolution Socccer (PES). It’s so easy to sit at home in front of a screen and tap a few buttons, but surely the more physical and sociable option is to get out in a garage playing an instrument and forming a band, or running around on the field in the local park with your friends?

We got the idea to invest in sports after a visit to Central & Southern Europe in 2009 on an educational trip with Break Your Limits. Everywhere you looked there were children playing in the fields, playing hop-skotch, football, cricket. Families having picnics in the park or feeding the ducks. It reminded me of my youth, and the fun I’d have with my family and friends. Upon returning to the UK I noticed that the parks were empty. There were 3-4 people kicking a ball half-heartedly on the field. The playgrounds were strewn with beer cans and cider bottles, and the busiest shops in town were Game and Gamestation.

This really struck a chord with me and the rest of the DigitalVibe team, and a decision was made to invest in the development and promotion of sporting facilites and activities starting with primary school pupils. As part of a long term preventative scheme, we’re also going to be investing in similar projects in Europe with the aim to nip the problem in the bud before it takes hold in Europe to the extent that it has affected the UK.

You can read more about this issue at Break Your Limits.

DigitalVibe worked on a first phase development of the Go-Style website with Manchester Digital Agency AND Digital to produce a web application which allowed the client to log into an administration interface upon which they could perform functions including:

Adding, editing, and deleting articles

Adding, editing, and deleting special offers (with downloadable vouchers)

Setting a “Publish Date” on articles and offers so that the website can intelligently control when content is displayed to the user. This allows the administrator to “stack” new articles with different publish dates so that they can schedule new content publication without them having to be there to press the publish button!

Promoting articles and vouchers to the home page. There may be times when you publish a new article but still want an existing item to occupy the main focal space on the front page, and we’ve catered for this.

AND Digital have since developed a new feature-rich website which provides additional features and an enhanced user experience.

We've been working with a Manchester Advertising and Marketing agency to produce a website for Village Hotels and 20th Century Fox to promote Village Hotels and the Night at the Museum 2 film.

We made the website with the view to boast the excellent visuals from the film and to strict image guidelines for both copyright and sizing guidelines from 20th Century Fox. The premise behind the project was to create a portal for visitors to catch a glimpse of the film whilst increasing business and awareness of the Village Hotels brand.

To provide a rich experience to the user, we introduced an intelligent competition entry system, and a Flash video player and slideshow depicting scenes from the film.

If you would like to see the website, please visit the Win With Village website.

In 2007, we had a great opportunity to work in Malawi to provide technical services to the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. When you have a chance to get away from the surroundings of your natural environment and work in Malawi, in the heart of the Rift Valley, surrounded by nature... it really strikes a chord.

There’s no denying it – riding on the back ledge of a pick-up truck knowing that you’ll be spending the working day building safe environments for rescued monkeys, chopping up 15 kilos of fruit for feeding time, and constructing education centres does feel more fulfilling that a day in front of the computer! Don’t get me wrong, we enjoy our work, but there’s something special about the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. Each day the centre evolves and provides more compelling anecdotes and heart-warming tales, all courtesy of the fantastic work of the staff, and in no small part due to the charismatic residents of the wildlife centre – which includes monkeys and baboons… even a hyena and a leopard!

We were so touched by our experience out there that we gave our time and resources for free and further supported the centre by sponsoring a vervet monkey by the name of ‘Bump’. You can read all about Bump and the other residents of the wildlife centre at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre website.

Over the last 18 months, the wildlife centre has received fantastic exposure to the public through input from Born Free and Kellogs. We’re great supporters of fantastic projects such as this one, and strongly encourage anyone to play a part in any way they can. Here are some of the ways you could get involved:

Volunteer

Become a ‘Friend of Lilongwe Wildlife Centre’

Animal Adoption

Over the coming year, we’re hoping to get involved in the project with further support and events, and would greatly appreciate your support of the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre.

DigitalVibe have pledged to provide technical consultancy and support to Manchester based business development organisation 'The First Hour' to develop a new online support network to compliment their one-to-one services.

The First Hour comprises of a small collective of business support specialists focussed on the Manchester business scene. Currently providing one-to-one support via local business networks and through Universities in the North West of England, The First Hour are looking to expand their coverage to a wider audience and increase their capacity by providing an online presence and resource for entrepreneurs.

DigitalVibe’s Karl Stringer commented “It’s vitally important that businesses in the area are given the highest possible support to help get started, and that they are introduced to the perfect contacts to help take their businesses to the next level. Over recent months I’ve sat with local start-ups and students of Manchester Metropolitan University to give support and advice on business ownership, so the opportunity to combine our skills of Internet technology and business development through The First Hour provides a perfect synergy.’

Development and consultation between DigitalVibe and The First Hour is ongoing with a beta release expected later this year. If you would like further information about the project, please take a look at the existing website and sign up for more information at The First Hour.
